Located in the vibrant Proctor neighborhood of Tacoma, Washington, Fiercelocks has been a cornerstone for dreadlock artistry since 2005. With a cosmetology license earned in 1993, Jonquil began her journey as a Dread Artist after attending an entry-level dread and extension class at Hairpolice Minneapolis. Her expertise has grown over nearly two decades, making her a trusted name in the industry.
Though Jonquil no longer wears dreadlocks herself, she enjoyed 14 years of the journey, embracing both natural locs and extensions from 2005 to 2019. These days, she opts for a lightweight A-line bob but continues to bring her passion for locs to her work and clients.
Her advice to dreadheads? “Enjoy every moment locked, every phase and stage. Have fun with your locs! Sample a variety of embellishments, lengths, and styles. You don’t know how long your journey will be. Don’t be afraid of short locs if the weight becomes too cumbersome or side shaves or A-line shapes. These styles are unique and versatile and can really relieve weight on your neck.”
Jonquil’s favorite Dollylocks products reflect her thoughtful approach to hair care. “My favorite scent to inhale is definitely Dreadshop, but the one I use the most is Unscented. There are a lot of sensitive folks where even a lovely scent is too much scent. My other daily driver is Rosemary Peppermint Refreshening Spray. Almost everybody loves me to use this product when I finish crochet work.”
Jonquil’s connection with Dollylocks founder, Alin Leslie, began in 2006 and grew stronger after they met in 2007 for advanced education. “Alin is a superb and organized educator and a gracious and steadfast friend. We met because of our interest in dreadlocks and education, and we’ve stayed connected because we make time and space for each other in our personal lives. Joy in personal and business development crosses over fluidly.”
Jonquil’s commitment to her craft and her community shines through her artistry and her enduring relationships. Whether you’re just starting your dreadlock journey or are years into it, her expertise and perspective are invaluable
