FAQ
How much Dollylocks product should I use, or how much do I need?
A little goes a long way with Dollylocks products! All of our ingredients are plant-based, multi-certified, and ethically sourced. Created residue free, to be used in moderation until desired results are achieved. We recommend starting with a quarter sized amount or 4-6 sprays when applying and to work the products fully through your dreadlocks, this will help with distribution and disbursement. Take note! Mother nature created our ingredients which are all water soluble, so If too much product is applied, simply wet your hands or spray hair with water and work product through to dilute the excess product. Voila!
What is the difference between the Refreshening Spray and Cleansing Spray?
The Cleansing Spray and the Refreshening Spray differ in how they nourish and maintain dreadlocks and hair, both are applied directly to the scalp, the Refreshening Spray also to the lengths, for in-between washes to refresh the scalp, soothe irritation, and for hydration. The Cleansing Spray is an alternative to washing removing excess oil and buildup, and is removed after application using a damp cloth, whereas the Refreshening Spray is a light leave-in and focuses on rehydrating and revitalizing the hair, adding shine and freshness without weighing it down.
How do I use the Tightening Spray and Tightening Serum and what is the difference?
For both products, we recommend sectioning your hair to ensure even distribution using 1-3 times per week, as needed, to encourage the locking process. Use the spray 12” from your hair for optimal coverage, and the serum, distribute a small amount from hands directly to dreadlocks. The main difference is in the product texture and how they work on your hair. The Tightening Serum has a thicker consistency that helps lock in moisture and provides a bit more hold and repair, which is ideal for keeping dreadlocks neat and hydrated. The Tightening Spray contains sea salt offering more locking power with a defined finish, making it easy to apply evenly across your hair.
What is the difference between the Shampoo Bar and Liquid Shampoo?
The Shampoo Bar is formulated with sea salt, which will help the locking process in young dreadlocks, however works well on all dreadlocks. Liquid Shampoo is recommended for any age of dreadlocks or synthetic/ wool fibers and fabric dreadlocks. For optimal results, wet hair and apply a quarter size per section of hair by ‘rinse and repeat’ or add a quarter size at a time with water per section, continuing either process until the shampoo begins to lather. Our formula does not over lather like a traditional detergent soap shampoo, so you do not need as much as you think!
How do I do a Dreadlock Detox?
We recommend detoxing your dreadlocks 2-4 times a year depending upon your occupation and lifestyle. One pouch will generally be enough for your whole head, however if your dreadlocks are mature and never been detoxed, two pouches may be necessary for back to back applications. Any receptacle that will hold 2-4 gallons of water will work, however a shampoo basin is recommended for optimal submersion.
How do I use the Conditioning products, are they safe for dreadlocks, and how is the oil different from the new Conditioner?
Both are designed for hydration, repair, revitalization, and nourishment, with a quarter sized amount dispersed into palm, rubbing between your palms and apply directly to dreadlocks. Both Oil and Conditioner are fantastic for the lengths, however the Oil can also be applied to the scalp for severe dandruff or scalp issues, as a pretreatment before shampooing, or to leave-in for a deep conditioning treatment. The Conditioner is applied to the lengths of hair after washing as a leave-in or to be lightly rinsed out. The Conditioning Oil and the Conditioner work differently on dreadlocks and hair. The Conditioning Oil is a blend of natural oils that deeply nourishes and locks in moisture, making it ideal for dry or mature dreadlocks that need extra hydration. The Conditioner, however, has a creamy, lightweight formula designed to hydrate, soften, and smooth the hair, which helps reduce frizz and maintain a cleaner, more defined look without adding weight. Both are residue free, providing vital nutrients the hair loves and will absorb, as opposed to sitting heavily on the hair, making these products versatile and vital for healthy hair.
What is the recommended way to apply the Tightening Serum and Spray?
The Tightening Serum and Tightening Spray are designed to encourage dreadlock formation. To apply them correctly, section the hair, and for best results, use them 1-3 times per week. Spray the Tightening Spray about 12 inches away from the scalp for even distribution. For the serum, apply directly from your hands to the locks, focusing on the areas that need extra hold or moisture.
